Absract Narrative Sound Design
I chose to create a sound piece for "The Spheres" by Richard Grant (2014) because I was captivated by the rock's sad and agitated movement. This inspired me to explore a musical narrative of astronauts in space dealing with the aftermath of their rocket ship exploding. Using the circumplex model of affect, I mapped out emotions such as tension, terror, and hope, and translated these into sound. I crafted percussive reverberant sounds to signify danger and fear, atmospheric tones for calmness, and string instruments for a fuller, ambient sound. Drawing inspiration from John Powell and the Interstellar theme, I blended rhythms and tones to portray the astronauts' realisation of their doomed situation. As the story progresses, the sounds intensify, climaxing with a final breath-like note representing the astronauts' passing. The abstract nature of this piece allows for personal interpretation, while still effectively conveying the intended emotions.
