Enhancing Chronic Pain Management with Augmented Reality
Chronic pain is a debilitating condition affecting millions globally, with significant impacts on quality of life and productivity. The World Health Organisation reports over 619 million people suffer from lower back pain, one of the most common chronic pain conditions. Other conditions, such as fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, add to this issue, with fibromyalgia alone affecting 2-4% of the population, predominantly women. Current chronic pain management methods, including medication, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes, have notable limitations. Medications can lead to side effects and dependency risks, while physical therapy may be difficult to adhere to due to time constraints or mobility issues. Additionally, many digital pain management solutions lack engagement, personalisation, and effective progress tracking, leading to decreased motivation and suboptimal outcomes.
Addressing the multifaceted nature of chronic pain we created QiFlow, our app integrates Qigong practices to offer a comprehensive and engaging solution. Qigong, a traditional Chinese practice involving coordinated body movements, breath control, and meditation, has been shown to improve physical and mental well-being. Our app leverages augmented reality (AR) to create an immersive experience, guiding users through personalised Qigong routines tailored to their specific pain conditions and preferences. The app includes educational materials on chronic pain and Qigong, progress tracking, and integration with healthcare providers to ensure a holistic approach to pain management. QiFlow aims to provide sustainable pain relief, enhance mental well-being, and foster a supportive community for individuals suffering from chronic pain.
